Michigan Form MI-W4: What You Should Know

Michigan will use the Form MI-W4 to record withholding on an individual's tax return to the extent permitted by State law. See Michigan, Employment Taxes § 1.6. The tax rate you will be reporting to the IRS on your Michigan tax return, as authorized by the federal IRS, will also be used to determine the amount of withholding that Michigan employers may withhold of the pay you receive. See Treasury Regulations Section 1.6421-1(e) Employer's Michigan Withholding Exemption Certificate and Instructions (MI-W4). Michigan Employer Form MI-W4 Employer's Form MI-W4 is a form prepared by the Michigan Department of Treasury and required by Employer's Michigan. Michigan has an employee withholding exemption certificate where Employer's Michigan can prepare a Form MI-W4 on its behalf. Form MI-W4 was also produced by Employer's Michigan and may be issued by the Michigan Department of Treasury. Employer's Michigan does not need to prepare another form for a Michigan taxpayer. The Michigan Department of Treasury will handle payment of the withholding tax on all Employer's Michigan withholding tax withholding on the pay the taxpayer received from the Employer's Michigan. Michigan Exempt Organizations The Employee's Michigan Withholding Exemption Certificate and Instructions provides you with the necessary eligibility information for the Employee's Michigan exemption certificate. This allows you to determine which organizations in Michigan are exempt from Michigan tax. To find out if your employer is exempt, complete the Michigan Exempt Organizations page on the Michigan Tax Form. Michigan Business Organizations and Non-Business Organizations The Employer's Michigan Withholding Exemption Certificate and Instructions provides you with the necessary eligibility information for the Employer's Michigan exemption certificate. This allows you to determine which organizations in Michigan are exempt from Michigan tax. To find out if your employer is exempt, complete the Michigan Business Organizations and Non-Business Organizations page on the Michigan Tax Form.
